The handsomely tiered lid conceals a neoprene ring that creates a tight seal with the ceramic base. This stealth seal serves a dual purpose. It keeps the contents safe from the elements while keeping your middle-of-the-night cookie raid a secret by eliminating any scraping or clanging noise between lid and base. That base, incidentally, has a subtle pattern of undulating ridges that recalls the look of a hand-thrown piece.
